Dapoxetine

What Is Dapoxetine?

Dapoxetine is a medication that is used for the treatment of premature ejaculation (PE). We will explain PE and the causes as well as treatment options in more detail a little later. Dapoxetine is a generic medication, which means it has exactly the same active ingredient as branded medications but as pharmaceutical companies who developed the medication have huge start-up costs, their medication is sold at much higher prices.

It was initially developed by the pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly as an anti-depressant. After their application to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for this use was not accepted, the rights to the medication were acquired by Johnson & Johnson in 2003. They then submitted a new drug application to the FDA in 2004 for the treatment of PE, and while phase 3 clinical trials are still under way in the US, it has been approved here in the UK by the Medications and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and it is available in many other countries.

It is the only medication which has been approved specifically for the treatment of PE so it can be considered a breakthrough medication. If you are suffering from PE, you can get this medication on the National Health Service (NHS) with a prescription by visiting your GP or local sexual health centre. If, however, you would rather not talk to a health professional about such personal and potentially embarrassing issues, you can buy Dapoxetine online in the UK from our pharmacy.

What Does Dapoxetine Treat?

Dapoxetine tablets are used for the management PE. This is one of the most common sexual disorders that men face, all across the globe, with a prevalence of up to 33% as stated in a 2020 literature review. It is not a disorder which is commonly talked about and may even be considered taboo in some countries, so you may feel like you are suffering alone, but this is far from the case. There are several ejaculatory disorders, including premature ejaculation, delayed ejaculation, and retrograde ejaculation, with the former being most common. Delayed ejaculation is defined as a significant and unwanted delay in ejaculation by 30 to 60 minutes or not being able to ejaculate at all, at least 50% of the times you have sex.

Retrograde ejaculation is very uncommon, and it is characterised by the semen travelling the wrong way after orgasm, i.e., it travels up the urethra into the bladder. This does not affect a mans ability to orgasm and it does not pose any health risk, however it may cause fertility issues. As we mentioned earlier, PE is the most common form of ejaculation problem, and international guidelines define this as ejaculating within one minute of penetration.

There are two types of PE, namely primary PE and secondary PE. Primary PE means the disorder is life-long and has always been there and is usually caused by psychological factors. Some possible causes include the following:

  • Traumatic childhood sexual experience - this can be a range of experiences, including sexual abuse.
  • Conditioning - if as a teenager you conditioned yourself to ejaculate quickly to avoid being caught for example, this can persist later in life.
  • Strict upbringing - this includes the way your parents brought you up and their beliefs about sex.
  • Physiological reasons - this can include extra sensitivity of the penis

The above list is not exhaustive and there are many factors which can influence sexual health. If you are unsure about the cause of your symptoms, you can seek professional health advice. Secondary PE, also known as acquired PE, is more common, and this means that the disorder has developed later in life. It can be caused by either psychological or physiological factors, or a combination of the two. Some possible causes of secondary PE include the following:

  • Prostatitis - inflammation of the prostate gland
  • Thyroid problems - overactive or underactive thyroid gland
  • Mental health problems - these could include depression anxiety
  • Using recreational drugs or drinking alcohol
  • Relationship issues - this could be anxiety about a new relationship
  • Trauma - this can include surviving an abusive relationship or being sexually assaulted

A lot of men find that the symptoms PE fluctuate and that they are worse at the beginning of a new relationship. As this medication can be used as-and-when necessarily, this is useful for men who do not experience it all the time. If your symptoms are psychological in nature then it may be worthwhile implementing some psychological management options, such as couples therapy, counselling, or talking therapies like cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

The latter is useful for changing the way you think about negative things which will impact on the correlating negative behaviour. Many men opt to buy Dapoxetine to use alongside therapeutic techniques to maximise the benefits of each and for a more holistic approach. Dapoxetine is commonly used as a first-line treatment for PE due its high efficacy and safety profile.

How Does Dapoxetine Work?

The Dapoxetine mechanism of action is different to other male sexual dysfunction medication, for example those used for erectile dysfunction (ED), which target the cardiovascular system. We will look at the differences between the two a little later. As we discussed earlier, Dapoxetine was initially developed as an anti-depressant, and it falls under a class of medications known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). The rapid onset of action made this unsuitable for use as a treatment for depression, however this is a highly useful property for the management of the symptoms of PE.

As a type of SSRI, it targets the central and peripheral nervous systems and prevents the neurotransmitter serotonin from being reabsorbed back into the neuron. The ejaculatory reflex is controlled primarily by the sympathetic nervous system, with the pathway originating from a spinal reflex centre and mediated by the brain stem. Although the exact mechanism of action is not fully understood, Dapoxetine modulates this reflex causing ejaculatory latency. Ejaculatory latency is a side effect of many SSRIs and that is why this is such an effective medication. Dapoxetine tablets work much quicker than other SSRIs and so the effects will be apparent much sooner.

How to Use Dapoxetine

The exact Dapoxetine dosage will vary from person to person depending on the severity of the disorder, frequency of symptoms, and any contraindications. Dapoxetine 30mg is the usual starting dose, which can be altered if necessary. It is always best to take the lowest possible therapeutic dose to reduce the risk of any unwanted side effects. A lower dose may be indicated if you are sensitive to medications or you have a condition which is contraindicated. Dapoxetine 60mg is the highest recommended dose, and this is indicated if lower doses have not been effective enough.

Regardless of the strength, you should not take more than one dose in a 24-hour period. It is also not advisable to take the medication every day. The tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water or juice, around 2 hours before anticipated sexual activity. It is important that you do not crush or chew them, as this could cause too much of the medication to enter your system at once, which can be dangerous. Before you buy Dapoxetine you should carefully consider the most appropriate dose for you and seek professional advice if you are unsure.

How Long Does Dapoxetine Last?

Unlike other SSRIs which take up to 2 weeks to feel the full benefits, the desirable Dapoxetine effects will be achieved much quicker. Other SSRIs can be used off label however, if this is found to not be suitable. The active ingredient is absorbed rapidly via the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, to the cardiovascular system and then to the brain where it exerts its effects. It reaches peak plasma concentration 1 to 2 hours after ingestion and has a bioavailability of 42%. The absorption rate may be delayed if taken with a high fat meal, however the amount absorbed remains the same. The medication has an initial half-life of 1.5 hours and a terminal half-life of 19 hours, which means the active ingredients will have been eliminated from the body after 19 hours.

Dapoxetine Side Effects

Unfortunately, all medications have the potential to cause adverse effects, and you should be aware of any possible side effects before you buy Dapoxetine. Most men find that any side effects they experience are mild and resolve fairly quickly on their own. Some of the more common Dapoxetine side effects include:

  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety
  • Sweating
  • Flushing
  • Hypertension

You do not need to stop taking the medication if you experience any of the above side effects, unless you find them particularly bothersome or they do not go away. Dapoxetine side effects are usually more prevalent with higher doses, but they should not be severe. In rare cases, some people will experience anaphylaxis in response to taking this medication. Symptoms of anaphylactic shock include swelling of the face and lips, a rash or blotchy skin on the face and neck, closing of the airways, trouble breathing, and feeling cold and clammy. If you experience this, then you should seek immediate medical attention and stop taking the medication.

Is Dapoxetine Safe?

Dapoxetine is commonly used in the UK because of its high safety and efficacy profile. The medication has undergone numerous rigorous clinical trials to ensure the benefits outweigh the risks and that the effects of the medication are consistently statistically significant. Before you buy Dapoxetine however, you should be aware of any possible contraindications. Seek advice from a health professional before taking this medication any of the following apply to you:

  • You are allergic to Dapoxetine or its constituent ingredients
  • You have a severe heart condition
  • You have a history of syncope
  • You suffer from severe hypotension
  • You have serious liver or kidney problems
  • You have bipolar affective disorder or severe depressive disorder
  • You are taking anti-depressants, including SSRIs

Dapoxetine and alcohol are not an ideal combination, so you should be careful if you drink while taking this medication. As we mentioned before, you should not take it every day as the medication targets neurotransmitters associated with emotional regulation, and taking it too regularly could cause an imbalance, resulting in low mood. If you have been taking it daily or for a long time, then you should taper off it, as stopping it abruptly can cause unpleasant side effects.

Dapoxetine Benefits

There have been numerous double-blind placebo-controlled phase three clinical trials with over 6,000 participants. The trials showed consistent and statistically significant results with a P value of less than 0.005. It is important to have realistic expectations regarding the change you will experience after taking Dapoxetine. It may take several doses (not more than one per day) for the medication to exert its full effects. In this case you could try another SSRI off-label.
